What's
your Story?
We
love to hear about all the ways people use our
pins.
Laura Lee
Hervey Laura's
Story: Laura was born on December of 1962,
in Annapolis, Md. She attended St. Mary's School
and enjoyed dancing, swimming, golf and tennis.
Laura attended Gwynedd Mercy High School, where she was
a member of the National Honor Society, and honored in
Who's Who in America. In 1980, Laura
attended F&M in Lancaster, where she performed in a
dance club, and was a founding member of Alpha
Phi. She graduated in 1983, with a major in
Business and a minor in computers. Before
attending graduate school, in Washington, D.C. she
returned home to New Hope, where she worked for a
Natural Foods Merchandiser. She traveled to
Anaheim, California where she was scheduled to speak at
a trade show. It was while in California, that
Laura was involved in a horrific car
accident. On February 17th, 1986, our
family heard the words TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY for
the first time. UCI Medical Center was able to
save her, but Laura was still in a coma. She was
airlifted to BMRH in Malvern, PA where she emerged from
her coma. Laura was brought home to start
intense recovery with the dedicated nurses and
therapists. She had to relearn how to talk, and
spent five years having to be tube fed.
Immediately after the accident, Laura reverted to a
third grade level. She now enjoys playing
scrabble, working on her computer, and horseback
riding. She was able to ride in the Maire's Horse
Show at Thorncroft with the help of Mr. Dixon and two
volunteers. She also participates in the
handicapped division of the Devon Horse Show. She
loves showing off her ribbons! Please help
our family's quest to make the Brain pin a universal
symbol of recovery from TBI. This disease adds a
new member every 23 seconds. It knows no
boundaries, men, women, or children. Concussion,
stroke, aneurism and head injury are all diagnosed to
describe the same thing, brain injury. All of
the pins that are passed out are bought by myself,
meaning that 100% of the donations received go
back to the community. If you would like to donate
to the cause please visit our fundraiser site http://www.chescocf.org
Thank
you!
Beth Ann
Hervey

Since October of 2006, Beth
Anne has distributed over 7,000 brain pins to friends
and supporters of Brain Injury Care and Research. She's
opened not only our eyes, but those of thousands of
other people from all walks of life with her tireless
work. Way to go, Beth Anne!!

Currently, there are at least 5.3
million Americans living with a disability because of a
brain injury. Every 23 seconds a traumatic brain injury
occurs, and in the next year, an average of 1.4 million
Americans will sustain a traumatic brain injury. A
traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or
jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that
disrupts the function of the brain. In
honor of National Brain Injury Awareness Month, we will
be donating a portion on March's sales to the Brain
Injury Association of America. Founded in
1980, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is
the leading national organization serving and
representing individuals, families and professionals who
are touched by a life-altering, often devastating,
traumatic brain injury. The BIAA provides information,
education and support to assist the 5.3 million
Americans currently living with traumatic brain injury
and their families.
