Congratulations to the 2011 Scholarship Recipient: Olivia Grothaus About this fund... The goal of The Stephen Chandler Ericson Foundation is to provide financial support to a Pennsylvania, Chester County High School senior. The scholarship will aid them in the funding of their freshman year of college or trade school. Each year the high school scholarship team selects a student that reflects the criteria as established by Stephen’s parents in 1984. The qualities we look for are Christian/spiritual character, academic performance, athletic ability, good sense of humor, school spirit and acceptance at a college or trade school. About Stephen... Stephen was a gentle, kind and wise soul. He had a great capacity for love and understanding that did not match his youthful years. On September 19, 1984 at 6:03pm at the age of 16, Stephen entered Heaven. It was a Friday afternoon during a soccer game – Stephen was running to score a goal and lightning came down from the heavens. It was a rare occurrence in that the lightning and thunder came at the same time – it was so solitary! Stephen was surrounded by the lightning and God’s love and we were blessed to have him with us for five days before God called him Home. Turning Tragedy into Triumph! Stephen’s mother and father, Laura Chandler Ericson and Joseph H. Ericson, Jr., turned tragedy into triumph and created The Stephen Chandler Ericson Scholarship in 1984. The first award was given in May of 1985 to Lee Johnson and continues to this day. In December of 2010 The Stephen Chandler Ericson Foundation was established. Our goal is to raise $35,000 by the year 2015, the 30th anniversary of the scholarship, which will allow our fund to become perpetual and provide a scholarship to a young person each year for eternity.
